The proposal for the Integrated Multimodal Transit Hub in Trivandrum is clearly very ambitious in terms of transportation-oriented architecture. It is strong in terms of the comprehensive integration strategies for metro, rail, bus, pedestrian, and vehicle systems, based on clear zoning and traffic strategies. It clearly translates the strategy for ‘flow without friction’ into spatial, sectional, and roof-level strategies, resulting in a transit hub that is very much focused on the needs of passengers. In terms of architectural definition, the strategy has clearly been able to transform infrastructure into a landmark, while incorporation into the landscape adds further importance to it.
What might further be developed is the human scale experience presented within the grand interior concourses. The issue of circulation efficiency is handled well, but it might help to create a greater level of spatial complexity, perhaps through local landmarks, compression releases, or the use of program insertions, such that the scale of the infrastructure can be more effectively integrated with the human scale experience of the space.
